Full Moon in Scorpio

IMG_6515This is the chart for tonight’s Full Moon. This one is happening in the intense and sometimes scary territory of Scorpio. The chart points out a few interesting facts about this event.

For one thing, Pluto – the Planet that we humans named after the mythological Lord of the Underworld – will just happen to be located near the very bottom of the chart at the exact moment of the Full Moon. This seems like a fitting place for an Underworld God to be. Pluto is said to “rule” Scorpio, and anything in it, which would include the Moon during this passage, so Underworld vibes may be abundant this evening (and for a day or two on either side of the Full Moon). Pluto is also making a very agreeable sextile connection with the Moon, suggesting that the energies represented by these two symbols will be ready, willing, and able to work together in agreeable and potentially exciting ways.

With the Ascendant in Libra and a packed Seventh House, themes of partnership are also being pinged with some real enthusiasm during this Full Moon. Libra – the seventh Sign – and the Seventh House both have much to do with important one-on-one relationships. It could be that the grounding presence of the right partner may be exactly what you need to inspire you to not only descend into your own personal Underworld, but also to then find the strength within yourself to make the wearying climb back up into the light.

Uranus and Mercury are teaming up in the bold Sign of Aries to lend us courage if we embrace these strong partnerships. Honest communication will be key, and that Uranian input may result in oddity: odd partners, odd interactions, oddness welling up from within ourselves. If things get strange around this Full Moon, you can maybe take that as a Sign that you’re especially plugged into this one, and that you’re right where you need to be.

With the Lord of the Underworld himself encouraging a visit, and the light of the Full Moon to guide you and keep you safe, you have a fantastic opportunity for descending into the depths, retrieving something you stashed away down there in the dark a long time ago, and carrying it back up top so you can reclaim it and integrate it into your psyche. Your partner can’t travel down to the nether-regions with you – these are journeys we have to make by ourselves – but take comfort in the fact that the right partner will always be standing by, ready to help you in any way possible. Have faith in your partners…and have faith in yourself.

Happy Full Moon in Scorpio!

Astro-Watch, May 3: Mercury Meanderings

First of all, for those of you who fear it when Mercury goes retrograde, then today is the day you’ve been waiting for. Today, Mercury stations direct. In regular-speak, that means our quick little neighbor stops its latest retrograde activities, and starts marching in forward-looking fashion again.

Today’s station is interesting even beyond what it might usually represent, because Mercury is almost on top of Uranus’ position in fiery Aries as it’s making this apparent reversal in its course. If you have any significant placements in your birth-chart in the same vicinity of Aries, or if you have anything in the corresponding late degrees of the other Cardinal Signs (Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), then you may really feel this event.

And then the presence of Uranus adds an extra dimension of newness and possible eccentricity to the proceedings. Uranus is the Planet of the Rebel, the Genius, the Exile, the Non-Conformist – so look for these energies to wash over your Mercury business at this time, lending your communications and thought processes an air of uniqueness, possible suddenness, and even some outright strangeness.

This might be an excellent opportunity for the cracking of codes, the solving of riddles, the running of mazes, and the dazzling of others with your inspired wordplay. You may also be on the receiving end of some important messages. Some astrologers like to say that Uranus is simply the “higher octave of Mercury” – the idea is that the former is sort of a more modern, more sophisticated updating of the latter, like a huge, oddball “Mercury 2.0.”

Whether you subscribe to this view or not, though, this combination of Mercury’s direct station and its conjunction with Uranus does feel like an indicator that our communications may be primed to experience noticeable surges forward in the categories of progress, passion, and maybe overall weirdness for a minute. Brace yourself for the oddity, but don’t shy away from it – instead, lean right into it, speak your truths as needed, and allow others to do the same. Your word is your wand…what spells do you want to be casting with yours today?

Mosh-Pit in Aries Today!

The Sign of Aries serves as host for several travelers today, as the Moon, Mercury, and Uranus all congregate there. The Moon is especially quick, and Mercury is no foot-dragger, either, so this configuration won’t last for very long. But what does this particular set of celestial circumstances mean for you?

For one thing, it will most likely mean a lot more if you have anything situated in that stretch of Aries in your own birth-chart. Check also for placements around the 25-degree mark of any of the other Cardinal Signs (Cancer, Libra, Capricorn).

But even in the absence of any such placements, we all might feel certain thematic winds blowing today in general. First, you need to look at what the Planets involved are all about. The Moon has to do with our emotional core, and our instinctual selves. Mercury is our communication function, and the more logical/rational parts of our consciousness. And then there’s Uranus: the urge toward newness and individuality. Uranus is a tricky one to predict, because by its very nature, it’s often about the unpredictable. It fires up without warning, spits out a lightning bolt or three when activated, and then settles back down into apparent slumber, always ready to deliver a jolt of change just as we’re focusing on something else.

And remember that this meeting is happening in the passionate, impulsive, conflict-ready Sign of Aries. It’s not a coincidence that this Sign is associated with the Ram, an animal designed by millions of years of evolution to run head-on into shit as its favored means of progress in the world. And when Planets wander through Aries, they tend to do their work in decidedly Aries-flavored ways.

Mix all of those notions together into a sort of conceptual smoothie, and what do you get…? There are plenty of possibilities, but but here are a few… We may all be called to face some intimidating and possibly unusual issues around communication right about now. Simply facing up to the challenge may be more important than whatever the eventual outcome might turn out to be. The only real failure is in refusing to take the test.

We might also find our linear left-brain and our chaotic right-brain working together in a rare show of synergy, delivering up profound insights and epiphanies that can pay dividends for days, weeks, or even months to come.

Be on guard, though, against impatience and quick tempers. Bullying might rear its ugly head for a minute or two, and reversals of fortune might be on the menu for some.

Mainly, since Uranus is involved, this could be a fantastic time for working on your own process of individuation. How can you become even more the unique being that you came here to be? What makes you so spectacularly…you? Uranus wants to help you to be that, but even more than you have been. Strip away the homogenizing layers of Papier mâché that the world has mummified you in during the course of your life, and access that fabulous weirdo underneath. Be brave about it – be Aries about it! – and the Universe may lend you its support…

Astrology PSA: What Does a Retrograde Planet Mean for You?

img_6113
These are the Tarot cards most closely associated with Uranus and Mercury, the two culprits committing retrograde-related acts later this month…

You’ve heard about Planets going retrograde, right? Even non-astrologers like to reference upcoming retrograde events, and usually in fairly ominous fashion…

Retrograde periods are not necessarily just horrible intervals to be waited out in the storm-cellar, though. It’s important to look at where a given retrograde shift is happening, and then see if you have anything in certain affected areas of the sky in your own birth-chart. If not, a given retrograde might pass you by with barely a whisper of impact.

Late December of 2016 features two relevant events here: on 12/19, Mercury goes into retrograde motion in the Sign of Capricorn, and on 12/29, Uranus comes out of retrograde motion in the Sign of Aries. How do you know if these developments will affect you…?

Look at your chart! Go to Astromatrix.org or Astro.com, and enter your birth information – that’s your  date, city, and time of birth – into their FREE birth-chart generators. If you have any placements in the Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), then this month may likely be an eventful one for you! If those stretches of sky are empty in your chart, though, then you may skate this time around in pretty carefree fashion.

Do check with a real, live astrologer for help with interpreting such things if needed…

Astrology/Tarot Mapping: The Magician

IMG_4733
The astrological symbol most often tied to The Magician is the Planet Mercury.

How well does this correspondence work…? For me personally, I like it pretty well, and I can see why people embrace it. In Astrology, Mercury symbolizes many of our active cognitive functions: thinking, reasoning, data-gathering through the senses. It’s also about communication, whether that be through speech, writing, language, symbols, math. The astrological Mercury is often connected with what we might call “Language Gods” from various mythologies, such as Odin, Hermes, Thoth… In fact, the name of the Planet derives from the name that the Romans gave to their version of the Greek God, Hermes, which name was…Mercury.

And check this out: our word for the middle day of the working week, Wednesday, comes from the Old English name for Odin, which was Woden (“Woden’s Day” –> “Wednesday”). And then look at the name for the same day in several of the Romance languages, and you see a certain pattern emerge: Spanish (Miercoles), French (Mercredi), Italian (Mercoledi), Romanian (Miercuri), Latin (dies Mercurii). Odin and Mercury congregate in that day-name, so now once every week, we quietly acknowledge the importance of the Language God concept as embodied in a name…which would probably please a Language God!

And I can see all of this in The Magician. He channels Divine Energy down into the mundane realms, and gives it specific form and effect via application of will and language. Naming and defining things often grants power – this is why in many mythologies and belief systems, it’s considered dangerous to hand out your true name like a modern-day networker would hand out business cards. You never know who might gain power over you…

Astrology and Romance…

IMG_4186The other day, I taught an Astrology workshop focusing on what birthcharts can say about a person’s romantic potential (you know: Valentine’s Day and all…). We leaned mainly on the personal Planets and the Ascendant, and off to one side, I tallied up all of the Sign placements in the attendees’ charts, because I’m nerdy like that, and because I thought it might be illuminating to see which Sign-energies might be most likely to propel people out into the cold to try to improve things in their romantic spheres…

Q: Care to guess which Signs were the most represented?

A: By a very wide margin, it was the Signs of Virgo (first place) and Leo (very close second) that topped the polls here. Not a gargantuan sample size, and only one event in one geographic locale studied here, but still interesting (he says, with his Mars in Virgo…).

Planetary Cards

IMG_4160This is a more Astro-advanced follow-up to the Zodiac Cards exercise. It requires that you know a bit about your birthchart. The idea is to explore the cards that correspond to the Planets that have the greatest influence in your chart.

For me, those Planets would be Neptune, Pluto, and Mercury…and the cards that correspond to those planets are The Hanged Man, Judgment, and The Magician, respectively. And I do actually feel that these cards are fairly accurate representations of big parts of my psyche!

How about you – do you know what your Planetary Cards are, and if so, do you feel that they paint an accurate picture of you?
